How to use wire rope clips?

Using wire rope clips involves several steps to ensure a secure and reliable connection. Here’s a guide on how to properly use wire rope clips:

Materials Needed:
  • Wire rope (the cable you are working with)
  • Wire rope clips (U-bolt and saddle type)
  • Wrench or spanner (for tightening nuts)
  • Tape measure or ruler
Steps to Use Wire Rope Clips:
  1. Determine the Number of Clips: The number of clips needed depends on the diameter of the wire rope. Here’s a general guide:
    • 1/8″ – 2 clips
    • 3/16″ to 1/4″ – 3 clips
    • 5/16″ to 1/2″ – 4 clips
    • 5/8″ to 3/4″ – 5 clips
    • 7/8″ to 1″ – 6 clips
  2. Lay Out the Wire Rope: Lay the wire rope out flat and determine where the loop or eye will be formed. Ensure you have enough rope for the loop plus a tail end (dead end).
  3. Attach the First Clip:
    • Place the first clip near the loop end. The U-bolt part should be placed over the dead end of the wire rope, and the saddle should rest on the live end (load-bearing part of the rope).
    • Tighten the nuts evenly until the clip is snug but not overly tight.
  4. Form the Loop:
    • Form the loop or eye to the desired size, ensuring it’s appropriately aligned.
  5. Place Additional Clips:
    • Space additional clips equally along the dead end of the wire rope.
    • The second clip should be placed as close to the loop as possible, but leave enough space to tighten the nuts.
    • The remaining clips should be spaced evenly between the first and second clip.
    • Ensure that each U-bolt is placed on the dead end, and the saddle is on the live end.
  6. Tighten the Clips:
    • Tighten all the clips uniformly. Start with the clip closest to the loop, then move to the furthest, tightening each nut a little at a time in a systematic manner.
    • Use a torque wrench if specified torque values are provided by the clip manufacturer to avoid over-tightening and potential damage to the wire rope.
  7. Inspect and Test:
    • Check that all clips are securely tightened and that the loop is properly formed.
    • Test the assembly by applying a load gradually to ensure the connection is secure and doesn’t slip.
Additional Tips:
  • Proper Orientation: Always place the U-bolt part of the clip on the dead end of the wire rope. The saddle should be on the live end.
  • Re-Tightening: After the initial load application, re-tighten the clips as the wire rope might settle and the nuts could loosen.
  • Regular Inspections: Periodically check the clips for tightness and any signs of wear or slippage, especially if the wire rope assembly is in constant use or under heavy loads.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your wire rope clips are used correctly, providing a secure and reliable connection.
